I was planning to add a black 10mm thick strip at the back for unit details somewhat like this.
I'll see if I can complete this base this week then I can see if it's a worthwhile project.

Basing 6mm Romans Part 2
Thanks to Dr Mike's (aka Cranium27) suggestion I've added a third rank which really does make the unit look a whole lot better:

Looking good. I like the idea of the label at the back too. Adds a bit of extra oomph to the stand ad ideal if you're running anything like a demo game.

Thanks Andy. I'm thinking of doing some counters to fit on to a corner of the label to show the units formation, casualties and morale state. I'm also wondering if this is the way to go for other eras, so for example I could have a Napoleonic French Battalion in column on the base but use a marker to indicate the actual formation of the unit. It does seem strange to not have a unit actually form a line or a square but perhaps thats more to do with wargaming "tradition"?

ReplyDeleteFor Black Powder we are using 6mm figures in three stand regiments so would have to order "form triangle", rather than square. As you say, it seems odd, but as long as everyone knows what they represent, either because of the stand arrangement or the type/position of a counter, it works for me.
Like the Romans very much - it's tempting me but I think I'll stick to my 10mm Imperial Romans for Warmaster Ancients. I've used them with Warmaster and Hail Ceaser and both seem fun.
